    A really deep, thoughtful journey into the world of primary maths
    I read this book when I’d fairly recently made the transition from secondary RE teacher to primary teacher and it was so helpful for me to get to grips with the most up-to-date and interesting thinking on teaching mathematics. In particular it has helped me to make the most of the maths textbooks we use. Kieran clearly writes from a position of experience and I really appreciate that voice of experience in filling gaps in my own subject knowledge and conceptualisation.

    Unashamedly spouting current English government text book propaganda
    P25:”I’m very aware of the criticism of textbooks or schemes, but I find any argument against them to focus squarely on factors that manifest as a result of improper utilisation brought about by two fundamental errors in management (which turn out to be not enough support).”Textbooks and externally-written schemes are definitely the best approach in many schools.However arguments against their use include:1. It’s much more time-efficient to teach the children in front of you what they actually need to know at the speed that works for them rather than to teach absolutely everything in tremendous detail in a way generically written for any class anywhere.2. The most effective and efficient teaching methods are low-floor high-ceiling structural methods and there aren’t any text-books or schemes that properly understand them (and they are very difficult to translate into pre-written schemes).3. Cross-applying textbooks/pre-written schemes to mixed-year teaching is a nightmare – it’s much more effective to use the low-floor high-ceiling structural teaching methods which understand that the most powerful way to learn in mixed-year classes is for children to be first apprentices and then experts with deep learning.4. While text books/schemes can absolutely be good enough (and often extremely good) for schools where that vast majority of children attend regularly and there is little movement in and out of the school, low-floor high-ceiling structural teaching is much, much better in situations where many children have huge gaps in their learning (e.g. post covid in many schools).5. Teachers who aren’t forced to follow textbooks are constantly inventing better ways of teaching than exist in the textbooks and are attaining deeper understanding about maths education. I know because I’ve been listening to these teachers and capturing what they do for the last eight years.To gain clearly insight into low-floor high-ceiling teaching more deeply try watching RebeccaTheMathsLady’s YouTube Video on Long Multiplication.P30″Making a curriculum from scratch is a tremendously difficult job and one that the greatest minds in mathematics education would happily concede is perhaps beyond them without the support of their equally learned colleagues”We are tied to our national curriculum of course. So what we’re actually talking about is whether or not schools and teachers can plan their teaching from the national curriculum or not. And of course they can! Those who need support can find everything then need on the Authentic Maths website. If you go to the RebeccaTheMathsLady worksheets page you’ll find curriculum extracts and term-per-page adaptable planning guides you can work from if you need some support to get started. These include links to free short videos which explain each key point in them in depth.In general the understanding in this book is just soooo… weak compared with mine. I don’t blame the author – I blame 11 years of cultural revolution and the persecution of experts in education in England. I’m sure Keiran would have been a star if he’d been lucky enough to live in enlightened times.

    A great guide for the experienced and inexperienced
    This is the type of book I wish I had read during my NQT year, as it would have helped me to realise key things about teaching a lot sooner, with maths pedagogy and pedagogy generally. From overarching ideas about procepts and threshold concepts, to implementable classroom ideas like using whiteboards in rows for more effiency, this book is full of tidbits of gold for all primary teachers. The book made me deliberate over things which now seem painfully obvious, like being careful with mixing colours of manipulatives and using arrows with bar models, that I had never stopped to think about before. A must read for all primary teachers; a must have for a primary school’s CPD library.

    A must read for all primary or maths teachers!
    This book is a masterpiece. Kieran shares a wealth of knowledge and expertise in Thinking Deeply about Primary Mathematics. His understanding of mathematics teaching goes far deeper than most educators. Kieran’s writing is so enjoyable. This is the kind of book you wish you’d been given during your NQT year. If you know a primary teacher, maths teacher or trainee then please buy this for them or point them towards it.

    An excellent venture into the world of primary mathematics and one that every Maths Lead (if not every teacher) should read. Really appreciated the reflection questions at the end of each chapter and learnt plenty of new nuggets (goodbye always, sometimes never) along the way.
