  1. Chris

Very Concise and Easy to Read
I really enjoyed how easy this was to read. Fully recomend.

    Concise but dense.
This book is great, especially paired with other Samurai history texts. It explains a major chunk of the Samurai’s history very well while also staying readable for the normal person.

  3. KD

Great, digestible insights into the nuances of Samuria history
I picked up this book as a layperson who is writing historical fiction and needed an effective, balanced, and inspiring education on the history of Samurai. I got that in spades, plus a very approachable tone and presentation that is rigorous and academically supported while also being a joy for a non-expert like me to read. I’m really grateful that Prof. Wert put this gem together to take readers through the complexity, nuance, and history of how the iconic Japanese warrior has become a deep part of many cultures’ view of the idealistic warrior. What’s more, I really valued the day-to-day, real-talk look at unconventional samurai and warriors who may not normally “make the cut” for the iconic, rose-tinted image (such as the women who played an important militaristic role in their families and Japanese history as a whole). This book provides plenty of truly interesting and informative food for thought.
