Enjoyed the book a lot.I feel that it is weighted to recent history. We are all familiar with Merkel and Kohl, but many Anglo-Saxons would be quite interested in the activity in Germania further back in time.

  2. John Davies (Dr)

This is an excellent book in that the author goes beyond the classic treatment of the behaviour of rulers and also incorporates the lives of the ordinary people. Her treatment of the recent history of Germany is clear and analytical.Highly enjoyable and highly recommended.

    Helpful and easy to read.
I just returned from a trip to Germany and this book provided a helpful history so I could understand the culture more completely.

    Excellent Introduction
With such a complex and complicated history, I think that this book does an excellent job of allowing a person with a somewhat limited knowledge of German history to get a basic foothold on how Germany came to be what it is today.

    Good Brief History
I bought this because I am learning German and wanted to understand a bit more about the history of Germany. The book did not disappoint. It’s frustratingly brief in places but that doesn’t matter because you can always look up details once you know an event existed. It can be a little hard going in places but in general it reads well.
